Nike Missile Site HM-40 Key Largo, FL

Welcome to the Key Largo Nike Hercules Missile battery HM-40. This was a missile site holding Hercules missiles in response to the cuban missile crisis in the 1960's. About 5 were built around South Florida. This one (dubbed HM-40) Was abandoned in the late 70's and now is part of the Crocodile lake national refuge.

This area is overseen by Monroe County sheriff and FWC (Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission). FWC Officers frequent the area but we had no unexpected visitors.
 Main Building
The compound is quite larger than I originally thought. Lots of housing rooms.

Very Remote.....

Creepy

  4. I was there in 1968 and sat and played the guitar for my best friend Chet Duda as he painted the mural in the 4th picture down. He sent me these pictures totally shocked that the mural was still there. Wow some memories!!!
